LAKE ERIE
FISHING REPORT
July 9, 2008 The Walleye bite has been good around Pelee Island in Ontario waters this week. The west side of the island around the 'Wagon Wheel Reef' area has been hot in 26-32ft of water. Also, some good catches have been coming in from just N of Pelee as well about 1 mile N of Scudder marina. Some good catches of walleye have also been happening around middle ground shoal and grubb reef on the NE side of Pelee. Ohio waters fishing has been good in the area of the 'sand bar' about 7 miles north of Vermilion, OH and off of Huron ohio in 40ft of water. Also, some good fishing has been going on in the western basin of the lake west of North Bass island out in the flats in 33ft of water. Good fishing has been in the 45/54 area on the middle two numbers on that lat long on the gps and further out at the 45/01 also. Trollers have been doing the best out in the western basin but the bite should be improving lake wide this week as the mayfly hatch finally slows up. Walleye have been a bit spotty this week in the island area around the shallow reefs so best bet might be to go east or west and test the deeper waters if you are targeting Walleye this weekend. Smallmouth What few Smallmouth Bass still inhabit the Lake Erie island areas seem to be holding up in the shallower water lately around reefs in 10-25ft of water. Some fish have been accidentally caught while walleye fishing, but Bass anglers have found a few fish hanging around the Kelleys island area. Pelee Island in Ontario waters continues to be the best area to catch Smallmouth in the island area of the lake. Yellow Perch Yellow Perch fishing has been great lately. Some of the best areas lately have been just north of Cedar Point amusement park, north of Lakeside, and west of Kelley's island. The perch are hanging over the muddy bottom areas and have been in 30+ft of water lately. Fish with shiner minnows on the bottom for best results. Steelhead Lots of steelhead were caught in June just off of Kelleys island to the east of Kelley Island shoal so there are fish in the area. Best bet for the famous trout is to go deeper and further east as waters warm. Look for the bite to be north of Avon and Lorain. Best area to target steelhead and have great success is in the Erieau, Ontario area. Which is about a 20 mile run east of Pelee island in Ontario waters. Good luck in all of your fishing adventures!
